It's not often we see a netbook able to stand out in some way, but Point of View's Mobii ION 230 just about manages it, thanks to its use of nvidia's Ion platform, rather than Intel's own chipsets.

Clearly the main draw of the Mobii ION 230 is the use of nVidia's Ion platform. In fact, you might argue that its Ion chipset is the only draw of the Mobii ION 230, as it's otherwise uninspiringly same-y. A 10.2in, 1,024 x 600 pixel display falls sadly short of the 1,366 x 768 pixel panel fast becoming standard fare for similarly sized netbooks and an Intel Atom N230 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive will stun no-one; though the latter two are supposedly easily upgradeable, if that's a concern.


Of course, while the netbooks own display might not be able to take advantage of Ion's 1080p-decoding capabilities, there is an HDMI port enabling HD video to be output to a larger, higher resolution screen. Gigabit Ethernet is provided alongside a mere two USB ports - again below par - and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. A 6-cell batter supposedly provides four hours of use, but I'd take that with a pinch or several of salt.

There's no word on whether the Mobii ION 230 is going to see a UK launch. Frankly, I doubt anyone will be particularly perturbed if it doesn't, but it's good, at least, to see that Ion is gradually making its way into the marketplace. Even if it could end up being too little, too late with the launch of Pine Trail drawing ever closer.
