Inspiron 13 Receives Inspired Makeover

After yesterday's sneaky launch of the new Inspiron 17, we have another new effort that's appeared on the company's Singapore website, the Inspiron 13. This looks set to provide an entry-level 13in machine, which we imagine will retail from around £450 given previous experience.

Not only has Dell's 13.3in Inspiron had a bit of an aesthetic makeover, now being both lighter and thinner, but its looks have also had a reboot. Its palm-rest is a fetching silver, and though the rest of the base is still matte black the lid can now be customized in white, black or red - though the blue of its predecessor has unfortunately been jettisoned.
Specifications have taken a leap too: most notably the screen's resolution has jumped from the bog standard 1,280 x 800 (16:10) it sported before to a more movie-friendly 1,366 x 768 (16:9).
To go with the screen, Intel's ancient GMA X3100 integrated graphics chip has been upgraded to an Intel X4500MHD as standard, while those who prefer a discrete card can now opt for ATI's Mobility Radeon HD4330.
Other options include CPU power up to 2.53GHz courtesy of Intel's Core 2 Duo, up to 4GB or DDR2 RAM and a 500GB 5400RPM hard drive.
Ironically, the biggest competitor to the new Inspiron 13 is probably Dell's own Studio XPS 13, but with prices likely to be lower we're sure the revised Inspiron will find its way into the homes and hearts of many consumers.
For now it's only available in Singapore, but hopefully it will make its way to our shores soon.

I will be in the market for a 13" size laptop later this year so it's nice to see more competition arriving.

Actually I stand corrected, the specs are quite impressive. Wonder how much extra the optical drive will cost though.

It's probably worth mentioning that the new Inspiron 13 has no integrated DVD drive, but uses an external drive instead. You'd think that, without the integrated drive, ... more
