You might not expect Samsung's R620 to differ all too much from the R610 it replaces - it's only 10 better after all - and you'd be right. But that's not to say Samsung's latest multimedia-centric system isn't worthy of consideration.

Starting from £699, the R620 offers a 16in, 1,366 x 768 pixel display an unspecified Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB of RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics and a 160GB hard drive. Higher specced versions, as well as upping the asking price, offer a Full HD, 1,920 x 1,080 pixel screen, up to 500GB of hard drive capacity and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics. A Blu-ray drive is present with all R620 configurations as is an HDMI output, for hooking the system up to an HDTV should that be desired.

Four USB ports, an SDHC card reader and an Ethernet port will shock no-one with their presence. One of those USBs being a combination eSATA/USB port is standard fare for a recent Samsung notebook and though a claimed 4.5 hours battery life is probably an overestimate in real-world use, the R620 should last for a couple of films easily enough - just avoid The Lord of the Rings. An anti-bacterial coating on the R620's keyboard - which comes complete with a full numpad - will be music to the ears of those worried they're somehow going to contract swine flu simply by using a laptop outside.
