What do you get if you take an HP Mini 1000, rip out its Intel Atom-based internals, and replace them with an nVidia Tegra system-on-chip? nVidia is the company to ask, because it has done just that, converting an HP Mini 1000 into a Tegra-based machine.

Spotted out at CTIA by Engadget, the not-really-a-netbook doesn't seem to have any problem powering the Windows CE build installed on the Mini 1000. Don't go thinking HP and nVidia are teaming up to create the kind of $99 MIDs nVidia has promised, though. The system is simply intended to demonstrate the relative simplicity of creating a Tegra-powered netbook-like system.

Admittedly, as Tegra isn't x86 compatible, there are a few limitations. For one, having to use Windows CE, rather than XP or (dare I say it) Vista. For web browsing, simple text editing, instant messaging and video watching, though, it should be capable enough for the average user - as long as the UI is good enough. Especially if nVidia's claims battery life running into days, not hours, hold true.
