Apple Ups White MacBook GPU, Lowers CPU

Continuing its 2009 theme of low profile product announcements, Apple has quietly gone about making some changes to its white MacBook.

The lowly non-aluminiumised model has seen a jump to (mostly) place it in line with the unibody range and now incorporates a much needed integrated nVidia GeForce 9400M graphics chip and Intel 2GHz Core Duo CPU. If you look closely the processor switch in pure clock terms is actually a drop falling from 2.1GHz in its previous iteration, but the 2GHz replacement is a newer generation supporting a faster 1,066MHz FSB (front side bus) so you'll be better off overall.

Memory also gets a bump from a pitiful 1GB to the near-industry standard 2GB though it remains of the DDR2 variety unlike the unibodies which are kitted out with DDR3. Bluetooth is the final change, moving from v2.0 to v2.1. These enhancements fall nicely in place with Snow Leopard's move to OpenCL GPU support, something you wouldn't want to try with Intel's GMA X3100 onboard graphics.

As usual Apple has quickly made the upgraded edition available in its US store, but Brits be careful as it isn't yet showing up over here. That said, given US pricing remains untouched by the alterations if you did just older the 'old' model I'd let Cupertino know about the UK's 30 days no questions asked return policy...

Update: It's now here in the UK with prices starting at £719.
