After all the teaser adverts, leaked photos and rumours, Sony finally unveiled its VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC today at CES. The P Series is a widescreen thin and light notebook, with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom chip in the driving seat. However, despite the fact that the P Series is based on an Atom platform, Sony was adamant that this isn't a netbook.

Backing up the Atom CPU is 2GB of memory, but that's the maximum that can be installed. You also get a 128GB solid state drive, which should be fast, light weight and battery friendly.

The P Series definitely looks the part, especially when closed. There are four colours available - white, red, black and green. Opening the device up reveals a silver keyboard, with a trackpoint at the centre for pointer manipulation. The trackpoint buttons sit on the very edge of the chassis at the front, just like on the classic VAIO X505.

The keyboard is surprisingly good to type on, especially since the keys are larger than they have any right to be. If there's one issue it's that there's very little travel in the keys, so it takes a bit of getting used to, especially if you're a fast typer. The trackpoint didn't feel quite so good - on the sample I tried it seemed to be quite difficult to use accurately, although it's possible that the mouse sensitivity was set too high.

The real highlight of the P Series is the screen though. Despite only being an 8in display, Sony has squeezed in a resolution of 1,600 x 768, which is quite simply staggering. Not only have you got a very wide desktop, allowing you to have multiple windows open simultaneously, but you've also got a decent height too. I'm sure that there are people out there who will find the resolution too high for such a small screen, but personally I don't believe that you can have too much desktop real estate. And of course this is an LED backlight screen.
