nVidia: Still Interested In Netbooks

While nVidia may have suspended its plans with VIA to collaborate on netbook internals, but nVidia wants to assure everyone it is still interested in the sub-notebook market. Apparently, though, it won't be entering the netbook market for a while as nVidia wants to see how the market will evolve.


Speaking at the Credit Suisse Annual Technology Conference, nVidia's CFO, Marv Burkett, commenting: "We're not saying we're not interested; it's a matter of how the market will evolve." nVidia Vice President of Investor Relations, Michael Hara, reiterated that sentiment while also detailing some of the problems nVidia sees with current netbook solutions, namely their lack of horsepower to properly to play games or video files. Hara did concede that for basic programmes and web applications, current solutions are powerful enough and also offer good battery life.

If nVidia were to offer a netbook platform of its own it seems likely it be would based around Tegra - a low power System on Chip solution packing an nVidia graphics core, ARM PCU, HD video decode engine and chipset onto a dingle die. Although how many potential netbook customers would be swayed towards an nVidia solution over an Intel on because the former could offer HD video playback is debatable.

Nonetheless, there's nothing wrong with a little competition entering the market to take on Intel. Especially if it benefits us consumers.
