For homeuser such netbook would be a second laptop and I would use a 3G dongle(usb stick) from my primary laptop instead to save extra data subscription fee. As long as it have blue tooth I will use my 3G phone for wireless connection.
however if it is used for business it would be a must to have 3g built in (hence hight the cost as well)

I would imaging that the Expresscard slot could be used for 3G / HSDPA use?

Without 3G built in, it's already obsolete. No one wants a netbook that only operates when near a Wi-Fi spot. Dell has a netbook with 3G inside it as does other Lenovo laptops.
Soon they all will.
