HP Launches 13.3in dv3500 Notebook

Over the last year or two the 13.3 inch form factor has become more and more popular. We've seen this in the form of the Apple Macbook, the Dell XPS M1330 and more recently the likes of the Lenovo ThinkPad X300. Yet, HP, still the largest PC manufacturer in the world, has not offered anything, something it finally rectified today by announcing the dv3500.

So, what do you need to know? Well, like most 13.3 inchers, the dv3500 utilises full power mobile components, thus offering a good balance between portability and processing power. This should make it ideal for the power user on the move, since it'll have the capacity to deal with processor intensive tasks such as photo editing and deal with running several programs at once.

Intel Centrino 2 is a given with processing handled by the medium voltage P-series of Core 2 Duo processors – all of whom have a reduced 25W TDP, 1,066MHz Front Side Bus and 3MB L2 Cache. Graphics will be provided by an nVidia 9300M G with 512MB dedicated memory, the 13.3in display will be LED backlit and the hard drive will be shock protected; thus ruling an SSD out of the running.

As for design, anyone who is familiar with the form factor will already know what to expect; namely an approximate weight of 2 kilos give or take a few grams and a deceptive wedge shaped design that makes it feel slightly slimmer than it really is.

Elsewhere design elements from HP's new laptop range (See: HP Pavilion dv5-1011ea) are continued, including the rather nifty 'frosted glass' touch sensitive media controls, a backlit HP logo on the lid and an ExpressCard travel remote. One key difference, however, comes in the colour scheme, with the glossy black lid and chrome/silver internals dumped in favour of a brass coloured finish inside and out that HP is calling 'Intersect' – no, we can't work it out either. Still, it looks pretty good and you'll be able to get hold of one this month for around £850.
