HP Joins 16:9 Club With HDX16 & HDX18 Notebooks

16:9 ratio laptops are very de rigeur this year, so HP's announcement of two new laptops based on 16 inch and 18.4 inch screens isn't exactly a surprise. Falling under the HDX brand, formerly reserved for the 20in behemoth known as 'The Dragon' (see: HP Pavilion HDX9095EA Entertainment Notebook), the HDX16 and HDX18 (pictured) aren't anything like as eccentric or innovative as the original HDX, but if you're after a multimedia powerhouse they should fit the bill nicely.

Based on an Intel Centrino 2 chipset, they'll both feature Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 resolution screens, nVidia 9600M GT graphics and dual-lamp backlight technology for enhancing the colour gamut and vividness of colour production - something that looked great on the Sony VAIO FZ31Z, though destroyed battery life in the process. Naturally enough, Blu-ray drives will be included for delivering high-definition video, as will digital TV Tuners for delivering TV at your usual SD resolutions.

On the audio side of things there's a "triple bass sub-woofer" and also Dolby Home Theatre; and given previous experiences on HP notebooks, the audio should be pretty decent. Both will be available come October, with the HDX16 starting at £999 and the HDX18 at £1,199.

That was my first impression too, not keen on the design.

Is it just me or does that design make it looks like someone intentionally scratched the touch pad with a fist full of nails?!
