Sticking with our subnotebook/netbook theme today Acer is next up with some crowd pleasing news: a six cell battery option for the Aspire One is now being made available.

Spotted available for pre-order on US site CDW by the sharp-eyed (and dinky?) Liliputing, the six cell has no formal release date but at an eye popping $119.99 (approx £60) it will cost almost a third as much as the Aspire One itself.

Against this however we are seeing contrasting reports that the battery will cost just an extra $50 on new machines, so what can we expect from such a battery boost? Sadly we don't know for sure. CDW keeps quite on the specs too, but basic mathematics (my favourite kind) from our impending review got two hours twenty minutes from the current three cell battery on full brightness with WiFi on so the six should safely hit the four hour mark. That makes it no Eee PC 901 beater but a definite improvement.

Still, complaints aside at least a six cell option is officially on its way - even if its pricing means this is the first time I have ever seen a battery listing recommending a laptop as an 'accessory'...

Look out for our Aspire One review soon...

In related news MSI's popular (and successfully rebadged) Wind is apparently set to take an unwelcome price hike according to site jkOnTheRun. Initially the US will be hit with the base model jumping from $399 to $499 (even if it still remains well clear of Eee PC 1000 territory). An MSI rep explained, "Since the cost of the battery and materials raise (sp), we had no choice but adjust the MSRP to $499.99 with 3-cell battery and $549.99 with 6-cell.”

We await UK implications with clenched teeth...

Note: Please excuse the MSI confusion in the earlier version of this story. It's what happens when I'm taken off my medication - tea and ginger snaps (thanks Brad)

Matters probably haven't been aided by one of the main battery factories burning down a few months ago.
