We've known for a short while that Sony's notebook range has been hankering for a refresh, and with Centrino 2 launching within the next week we're not surprised to see details surfacing of just such an update. Dubbed the Z-series, the new systems have been leaked to Notebook Review in a very helpful German image form (so I can't even copy and paste into Google Translate!) but here's what we can decipher as featured.

The Z-series will boast 13.1ni LED backlit screens with either a 1,366 x 768 or a 1,600 x 900 resolution, which even the most numerically-incapable of you should realise is a 16:9 aspect ratio - a trick we've seen before both with the Gemstone Blue range, and of course Sony's own Vaio TZ. Like the SZ-series they look set to replace (or at least slot beneath), the Zs pack optical drives and dual graphics chips - allowing users to swap between integrated or dedicated solution as needed.

The core specs are as follows:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo processor
  • Intel Centrino 2 platform
  • 4GB DDR2 800MHz
  • nVidia GeForce 9300M GS or GeForce 9600M GS and Intel integrated graphics (hybrid graphics chips.)
  • 200GB or 320GB hard drive
  • Draft-N Wireless
  • Carbon chassis
  • HSDPA (up to 7.2Mbit)

As if that wasn't enough, there are also an HDMI and VGA outputs, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a docking station connector (the dock itself undoubtedly sold separately) and an ExpressCard slot. All told, the Z-series looks set to be a perfect rival to the MacBook you-know-what.

Pricing isn't confirmed, but we expect it to sit in the £1,500 region, based on the specs. Hopefully we can grab some official details of Sony soon!

The affected nvidia cards are only 8400M and 8600M. The new Z will feature a 9300M (or9600M depending on source/model), so they should not be affected.
