Asus is apparently planning to copy the trend set by Acer's Gemstone Blue notebooks soon and offer 16:9 aspect ratio screens in a variety of notebooks, according to industry sources. No doubt hoping to capitalise on the growing popularity of notebooks for multimedia purposes, such as watching Blu-ray films and so forth.

Supposedly these 16:9 notebooks will sport 15.6in screens. If Acer's equivalent sized Gemstone system is anything to go by, that should mean both 1,366 x 768 and 1,920 x 1,080 panel versions catering to both the high-end and budget-constrained markets.

July is the purported ship date for these new machines, so we shouldn't have too long to wait before we see a full announcement, if there is going to be one (these are rumours after all). Other companies, including Sony and Lenovo are also suggested to be considering notebooks featuring 16:9 screens soon too.

The question is, are you tempted by this move to more film-like aspect ratios, or do you prefer larger black bars, but better desktop space?
