Asus isn't the only company officialling-up its new subnotebook entries, Acer has gotten in on the act too...

Leaked last week with Dell's offering the Acer 'One' is exactly what we have come to expect from the latest generation of low-cost ultra portable laptops.

For a start it features Intel's new low power Atom CPU (trotting along at 1.6GHz) and comes with an 8.9in LCD with widescreen 1024 x 600 native resolution and a choice of Windows XP or Linux operating systems. Then there's the option of solid state or moving parts hard drives, though in fairness the 80GB HDD is fairly par for the course and the 8GB SSD isn't likely to win many hearts' (though it can be augmented via the 5-in1 memory card reader).

Things improve when it comes to portability however as the One can be fitted with integrated WiMAX or HSDPA, while the battery life is a tasty six hours (no word on a minimum figure) and at 240 x 170mm and weighing less than a kilo it is the lightest of the nine inchers. RAM however will be limited to either a piffling 512MB or average 1GB.

Ignoring the usual black paint jobs, Acer will initially launch the One in white and blue with pink and brown following later in the year. You'll need to shell out £299 for an 80GB XP equipped One, while the Linux sporting 8GB SSD model comes in at just £199.

Already feeling overwhelmed by too much choice? Just wait until Dell and Sony go official...
