We've heard that Samsung needs to grow its laptop business and that an aggressive strategy has been put forward for achieving that growth. Looking at its latest notebook prototype, it seems safe to say the company isn't making idle promises.

A 12in AMOLED display is the centre of attention, boasting a 1,280 x 768 resolution in addition to all the usual benefits of this display technology. A contrast ratio 20 times that of conventional LCD displays is claimed, which is certainly noteworthy even if that is likely compared to cold-cathode backlit screens, rather than those lit by LEDs.

An improved manufacturing process means that production AMOLED screens should be at a much more reasonable level than previously. Doubtless notebook panel production is benefiting from the R&D put into Samsung OLED TV panels.

As well as a super thin screen the prototype machine also boasts a touch-sensitive keyboard, again helping to keep the dimensions down. Alas the demo unit isn't actually a representation of what Samsung is going to produce, but rather of what OLED technology could and should allow the industry as a whole to achieve by using it. That includes both Samsung and any third parties using its panels.

I can safely say my interest is well and truly whetted. It's truly a look into the future.
