Having harped on and on about the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 since it initially leaked towards the tail end of last month, it seems only fair to mention that it has now officially launched in the UK. So, is the system widely touted as a MacBook Air rival able to compete on price and specs after all?

Well, starting with the latter: things are a mixed bag. The 1.2GHz processor in the X300 is slower than the 1.6Ghz or 1.8GHz options in the Macbok Air, but conversely RAM in the Lenovo can be specced up to 4GB and is upgradable, unlike the 2GB directly soldered inside the Air. Screen wise Lenovo wins on resolution, offering a 1,440 x 900, LED-backlit panel of the same 13.3in size as Apples offering.

The X300 also manages to fit a DVD drive into its chassis, along with a 64GB SSD and HSDPA, GPS and Draft-N WiFi connectivity - oh, and it also has an Ethernet port. Interestingly the X300 can also perform the MacBooks trick of fitting into a manila envelope, although it is thicker and weightier, but that's the price of being a more featured system.

Price wise the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 starts at around £1,700. While that may seem expensive compared to the lower-end MacBook Air, it's important to consider that really they're intended for completely different end users. Further, Lenovo doesn't offer a version of the X300 without an SSD, which adds to the cost greatly. We've got a model coming in for review soon, so keep an eye out.
