There's nothing better than a handful of e-tailers posting up pre-orders for a product that hasn't yet been officially announced by the company making it. The latest victim to fall foul of this particular happening is Lenovo's recently uncovered X300 ultra-portable notebook.

This means, other than allowing us to confirm our suspicions about possible specs, is that we now have a rough idea on availability and pricing information although you'll have to live in the US to directly benefit from that right now. So then, we know that the X300 will pack a 13.3in LED backlit panel supposedly sporting a 1,440 x 900 resolution - a fair improvement on the 1,280 x 800 model sported by near-rival, the MacBook Air.

Unlike some speculators thought, the X300 won't be using the same CPU as supplied to Apple by Intel, but instead will have a low-voltage 1.2GHz Core 2 chip providing processing power. Elsewhere 2GB of RAM and, again improving on the Air, a DVD drive are also found. Supposedly Lenovo is also making GPS, WiMAX and WUSB modules available as optional extras which could prove interesting.

As previously suggested, a 64GB SSD drive is also an option, although as might be expected an expensive one. Indeed, a quick look at the Best Buy product page suggests that that particular option will mean a machine setting you back nearly $2,800 (£1400). While that's by no means cheap, a similarly fitted MacBook Air will cost in the region of £2,000 so the relative value of the Lenovo system is hard to ignore - even assuming likely £200-odd UK Tax when it hits our shores. Hopefully we'll get some official word from Lenovo on this one soon.
