It's been a while coming, but finally Dell has made its Latitude XT tablet PC official, coming good on promises of such a machine which hark back as far as 2004, if you'd believe it. Today's announcement confirms earlier leaks, while also filling a few of the gaps in the specification, offering some improved pictures and absolutely no confirmed launch date.

As we already know the XT has a 12.1in touchscreen with a (more expensive) LED backlight option and palm-detection, whatever that means. It also packs either a 1.06GHz Core 2 Solo or 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo and up to 3GB RAM. Hard drive options include 4200RPM 40GB and 80GB drives, a 5400RPM 120GB disk and either a 32GB or 64GB SSD, the latter options doubtless bumping up the price considerably. Graphics grunt is provided by an ATI Radeon X1250, Draft-N wireless is onboard and a choice of Vista Business or Ultimate editions is available.

Weight wise Dell is claiming that the Latitude XT is around 1.6kg, which we expect is sans battery and with an SSD, but reasonable all the same, also good is the option of inbuilt HSDPA, a useful feature on a device designed to be carried around. On that same note, battery life is slated as five hours with a standard battery or nine from an optional extended model. Unfortunately Dell rather falls down on price, with a base spec listed as $2500 (around £1300), a huge wedge of cash more than rival offerings; of course, Dell being Dell, two weeks after launch you'll probably find XTs popping up in boxes of cereal.
