If you've been waiting to get your hands on a Core 2 Extreme Mobile-equipped gaming notebook then your wait isn't over. On the other hand if you're, say, an architect and find your ThinkPad just doesn't offer the power you need to run your render-intensive programs on the road then a solution has arrived.

The Precision M6300 Dell is set to succeed the now ageing M90 and offers an impressive choice of components. As previously mentioned as much as a 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, although the base model will give you a 1.8GHz T7100, RAM ranges from 1GB to 4GB (with a 64-bit operating system), the screen is a 17in 1,440 x 900 with the option of increasing the resolution to 1,920 x 1,200 and graphics grunt is provided by an nVidia Quatro FX 1600. Interestingly while no LED backlight option is available currently Dell is thinking of offering it at a later date.

Elsewhere Draft-N wireless, Bluetooth and the option of an HSDPA card is on the bill as well as a Trusted Platform Module which allows the hard drive to be encrypted securing precious data in the event of the system being stolen. On that note, hard drive options range from an 80GB to a 200GB units with the option of a 32GB SSD to be added later.

Optical drive options are good too, with a 2x writeable Blu-ray drive on offer (a handy back-up solution no doubt). Connectivity comes in the form of DVI and VGA ports, ExpressCard slot and the choice of a fingerprint reader. Dell reckons you should grab about four hours of use from a nine-cell battery which isn't too bad considering the components in the machine. you can pick up an M6300 right now on the Dell site and prices start from £849 depending on your configuration.
