Slides detailing Intel's big plans to drop Microsoft's Windows in favour of Linux for its next generation UMPCs have spilled out across the web just a day before the company's planned announcement at IDF.

The news will no doubt irritate our intrepid IDF based Har-Even – who has jetted all the way to China for the event – since we've got the drop on back at base camp. The snaps were nabbed by tech blog uber-site Engadget and its grainy snaps confirm not only McCaslin but an alternative to UMPCs called 'MID' (Mobile Internet Device) which will be available in screen sizes from 4.5 to six inches, target consumers and drop Windows from a 500MB version of China's RedFlag MIDINUX.

Intel claims this OS will boot in just 18 seconds and take just five seconds to resume from standby. It will be a mix of open source and proprietary code which includes Firefox, Google Maps and Internet based office software. WiFi and HSDPA will also be built in.

Just what Microsoft will think of the whole situation is well... quite obvious and it will be interesting to see just what kind of response it can co-ordinate without its golden boy onboard.

So UMPCs have officially gone from rubbish, to rather interesting to hot gossip over the course of 12 months. If the next 12 months are equally eventful they may even become desirable. In fact, nah. Get outta here.
