In one of those we-knew-it-was-coming-since-the-last-IDF announcements Intel has finally officially unveiled the 'Centrino Pro' brand – a unification of its Santa Rosa platform and 'vPro' technologies.

Santa Rosa is the fourth generation Centrino platform long scheduled for May. This brings features support for gen Socket P Core 2 processors (Merom), an 800MHz FSB, Vista Aero ready integrated GMA X3000 graphics, the potential for NAND flash memory caching and – most interestingly – 'Kedron', Intel's wireless a/b/g/n capable WiFi.

As for vPro, this is like a business edition of Viiv and optimises security through 'Trusted Execution Technology', remote access features, and virtualisation while also including a software platform

“Intel Centrino Pro processor technology brings the best of our offering with Intel vPro processor technology and adds it right into our highly successful Intel Centrino brand for laptops,” said Mooly Eden, the curiously named VP of Intel Mobile Products Group. “This is an ideal time for this product as we continue to see notebook penetration rates increasing in business.”

We should see laptops based on Centrino Pro appearing over the next few weeks, so watch this space...

In related news Intel has also rolled out the first Core 2 Duo ULV (ultra low voltage) CPUs. The 1.06GHx U7500 and 1.2GHz U7600 will be the initial offerings and work with both the Napa and Santa Rosa/Centrino Pro platforms. Expect to find them inside some seriously sexy thin and light laptops sooner rather than later.
