While we all wish that laptop manufacturers would simply design a battery that lasted weeks on end, the reality is we are far more likely to get there via disposable or refillable fuel cells – as Samsung has just proved.

Designed as a companion to the company’s own Q35 ultra-portable notebook (above) this physically diminutive yet incredibly powerful (12000Wh capacity) fuel cell is claimed to offer a full month of usage – based on eight hours per day – from a single cartridge.

Samsung also says that the 650Wh/L energy density is nearly 4x that of any rival fuel cell offering though – since I have a life – I can’t boast to be able to deny or confirm this.

Furthermore I had no idea that noise levels are apparently one of the biggest barriers to the widespread adoption of fuel cell technology (I clearly suck in this area) but once again Sammy happily proclaims that this product will be no louder than a standard laptop in operation. In addition, a miniature version of this fuel cell is in the pipeline using just a teacup’s worth of fuel yet still managing a marathon-esque 15 hours of life.

Sammy informs us that the techno wizardry behind the product (it is a DMFC – Direct Methanol Fuel Cell – for those with a chemistry degree) has a few more safety check hoops to jump though but, all being well, hopes to see it on the market before the end of the year.

That would probably have sounded more consoling had I not told you on 2 January…
