You say: "it costs less to buy a second printer than it does cartridges for the
first. If customers do the logical thing, they’ll keep buying new
printers" -- but this is not the logical thing to do in any way, because the cartridges that come with the printer are only 35% full. In other words, the toner that comes with this £230 printer is only worth about £85, and when you order
new cartridges, yes, they will cost you £240 (if you get OEM ones) but
that's for almost triple the capacity that came with the printer. So
only an idiot would keep buying new printers in this case.

Absolutely, Daniel, to buy a new printer is not the wiser answer for your pocket and the environment neither. But , you can make several things to enhance your experience with the Kyocera FS-C5150DN toner cartridges, for example: you can use fonts like calibri that provides greater word count compared to the others or you can also use software like ecofont to put holes into your fonts. However, the wiser answer could be to buy compatible toners… they are cheaper at the same quality (almost the third part on this case).
