These gadgets must use an online server to relay the data through as both endpoints might be behind a firewall and traffic can be bi-directional. I guess the price of the bandwidth is included in the one-time hardware price.

It's a good idea, but probably more aimed towards non-technical people than towards hardcore Unix system admins. Personally, I'd prefer something more in the vein of SSH Fuse or perhaps AES/PGP encrypted cloud storage though. I'd rather not let computers run the whole day when I'm out and about.
