What is the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M410dn?

Mono laser printers have a reputation as rather dull workhorses, there just to get the job done. HP has boosted their level of interest with the LaserJet Pro 400 M410dn, though, by the simple expedient of adding a colour LCD touch screen, the kind commonly found on its inkjet all-in-ones.

HP LaserJet Pro 400 M410dn – Design and Features

The screen folds up on a multi-position stalk, though on our test sample, the screen was a little skewed in relation to the top cover, possibly due to taking a knock. All decked out in black, the front of the top panel has quite a busy look.

There’s a cover release, flip-over paper stop and a mystery depression on the top edge. At the front there’s a strange wraparound panel, which might be of benefit if it held loose paper sheets, but appears to be purely for decoration.

There’s a 250-sheet paper tray at the bottom of the machine with a 50-sheet, pull-down multi-purpose tray above that. A 500-sheet tray is available as an option, to give a total capacity of 800 sheets.

HP LaserJet Pro 400 M410dn – Connections and Installation

At the back are sockets for USB and gigabit Ethernet, though there’s no wireless support on this machine. To get at all the online goodies and to print from Android or iOS devices, you have to use a network connection for the printer.

Once registered with HP Connect, you can download useful pre-designed templates and print them out directly from the touchscreen. There’s a front panel USB socket, too, and you can display thumbnails of documents and images before printing them directly from a USB drive.

When you fold down the front panel, you can get at the single-piece drum and toner cartridge, which slides in easily, making maintenance a snip. The cartridge is available in two capacities, with enough toner even in the standard offering to prevent the need for continual replacement.
