Best Office Equipment

NetGear Infrant ReadyNAS

Whether you work at home, run a small business, or just have a number of PCs round the house that need to share data, the single most sensible investment that we would ever suggest you make is in a NAS box, and this example from Netgear is the best we have seen all year.

As Riyad pointed out in his recent editorial, NAS appliances are the epitome of a product that people don't realise they need until they've used one. High-speed access to all your data from any device attached to your network, protection from data loss, and sophisticated user access control. The NAS appliance provides all this wrapped up in a single box you can hide under the stairs.

With room for up to four hard drives the ReadyNAS provides all the storage capacity you should ever need and, if you use two or more drives, RAID redundancy ensures data is protected from hard disk crashes, so you'll never lose those vital order records or family photos. Gigabit Ethernet is also on offer so you always have high-speed access to your data and it goes without saying that user access can be controlled so you can prevent your children from accessing certain shared folders or make sure no other employees can access your financial records.

It may cost as much as a cheap PC and obviously doesn't have the same functionality but this is more than made up for by the shear ease of use, reliability, and security that the ReadyNAS provides.

While it comes with an undeniably hefty price tag, the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 more than makes up for it with unequalled print quality and usability. Eight separate print cartridges and as many interchangeable print heads means you always get optimum colour reproduction and gradation, and because you only ever need to replace the single ink that's run out or the head that's clogged up, long term use is very favourable on the wallet. Print speeds are competitive, and with paper size topping out at A3, this is particularly important. There's also no need to use an additional network print server, as the B9180 has one built in, which makes it a truly one stop solution for the small business. Finally, with HP's new Vivera ink technology rated to last over 200 years, the HP Photosmart B9180 can be relied on to provide long lasting memories for generations. Simply the best colour ink-jet printer we've seen all year,

We've been extolling the virtues of HomePlug for a few years now and we hope that some of you will have already taken up our advice about this truly useful technology. However, although the technology hasn't moved on a huge amount in the last year, we still had to recommend one particular version that we just think is a brilliant bit of kit. For those that don't know, HomePlug is a type of data-over-power communication technology that uses a house's existing power cabling to send digital signals, i.e. it turns your whole house into a network. In our thick brick-walled houses in the UK this technology beats Wi-Fi hands down for speed and reliability. This particular version from Solwise builds on this basic technology but by including three Ethernet ports on the one device, enabling you to connect up to three devices to the HomePlug network without the need for additional hubs or switches. It's simple, cheap technology but for the home or small business it makes networking old buildings a complete breeze.

What can we say that hasn't already been said about Axis cameras? They're simply the best quality IP cameras on the market and if you have the money we can't recommend them enough. That said, it's still nice to save money where you can and the Axis 207MW is about the best way you can do this without resorting to cheaper makes. Lacking motorised movement and requiring manual focussing, it isn't the most versatile camera but the wide-angle lens and high 1,280 x 1,024 resolution sensor more than make up for this. It's easy to setup and has sophisticated movement detection that when triggered will send you an email and start recording a video of what's going on. Put simply, if all you need to do is monitor a fixed well lit section of building, there is no better camera on the market.

Colour laser printers have come of age recently with the combination of falling prices and rising quality making for a compelling reason to switch from separate colour ink-jet and black and white laser models to an all-in-one unit. With this in mind, our pick of the colour laser market at the moment has to be The Kyocera Mita FS-C5025N. With the lowest running costs we've ever recorded, which work out at 1.23p per black and white page and 4.71p for colour, decent print speeds, and optional paper trays allowing paper capacity up to 2600 sheets, the FS-C5025N is the perfect one-stop solution for the busy office. And, with added extras like poster scaling, double-side printing, and decent quality photo production, it's very versatile as well.
