CES 2005 Part 4

Last year at CES, Samsung showed off the world’s largest plasma display – that 80in monster was absolutely massive, and could barely fit on the Samsung stand. This year the Samsung stand looked pretty similar to last year, except that the 80in plasma screen had been replaced with a 102in screen!

Words really can’t describe how ridiculously large this screen is, and I find it difficult to figure out who would ever want a plasma display this size. Personally I think that once you get over the 50in mark, you’re better off looking for a decent projector, but that’s just my opinion. Anyway, Samsung has been in a battle with LG for some time about who can say they have the largest screen. However, this year LG decided not to play, and stuck with the 71in model it showed last year, but made a point of saying that its screen was a production unit, rather than a headline grabbing engineering concept. Whether the 102in Samsung unit ever makes it to production or not, it's still a very impressive statement.
The Q30 notebook was drawing a lot of admiration on the Samsung stand. I can understand that, since I liked the Q30 so much that I gave it a Recommended award last week - you can read the full review here.

The Q30 that I reviewed was silver, but Samsung also had a red version on display, complete with matching red optical drive. The Samsung product manager mentioned to me that there was a red version of the Q30 available in Korea when he dropped the notebook off to me, and I instantly formed images of a slim and stylish notebook being ruined by a garish colour. However, in the flesh the red Q30 actually looks great, although I’m not sure if I would be brave enough to go with the red over the silver.
