Again it looks like the Plus camp is pulling ahead of the Minus camp. When it comes to RW media, Verbatim was showing DVD+RW discs rated at 4x – 8x, while the fastest DVD-RW media was rated at 2x – 6x.

The inevitable format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is of little consequence to Verbatim, since it will be producing both types of media. There’s still no idea of pricing for either type of disc, although HD-DVD should prove easier to produce. That said, Blu-ray discs are very similar to UDO discs and Verbatim is already producing these.

The idea of another format war is a depressing prospect, especially since most consumers find the current crop of DVD standards confusing enough. I guess we’ll have to see whether one format reigns supreme, or we end up with hybrid hardware like today. But either way, it looks like Verbatim is geared up for the future.
