CES 2005 Part 4

Verbatim was on hand at CES, showing that it will support each and every optical format that rears its head, both now and in the future.
Of most interest to me was a display of DVD-R DL discs. The (slightly blurry – sorry) image below shows a first generation DVD-R DL disc. Note that this media will be good for 2 – 4x burning, so we shouldn’t have the excruciatingly show write speeds that we saw with the first generation DVD+R DL discs. That’s assuming that the hardware will burn at 4x of course.

But as far as speed goes, the DVD+R DL format is streaking ahead. Also on show was an 8x DVD+R DL disc, proving that the DVD+RW alliance was serious when it announced that there would be no 4x rated media. That said, Verbatim’s 2.4x rated DVD+R DL media will write at 4x in some drives. In fact a Verbatim representative on the stand told me that the 2.4x media will burn at 5x on the latest 5x rated drives. I should have a Toshiba 5x drive waiting for me in the office when I get back, so I’ll be able to check this out first hand soon.
