It will likely not surprise anyone to learn that Onkyo's TX-SR707 and TX-NR807 A/V receivers are updates to the TX-SR706 & TX-SR806 but don't dismiss them off-hand because of that. Onkyo claims that both "are indisputably the best specified AV receivers that have ever been available at their price points" and looking at the specs I'm not immediately inclined to disagree.

Both amps are THX Select 2 Plus certified, with all that entails; the SR707 featuring seven 160W outputs and the NR807 upping those to 180W. Both offer six HDMI ports, one of which is front-mounted in the SR707, 1080p up-scaling courtesy the well-respected Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor and Audyssey DSX decoding has been added on top of Dolby Pro Logic IIz, as offered by the NR807 and SR707's predecessors.


Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding are obviously supported and the amps' HDMI ports are augmented by digital coaxial and digital optical inputs - three of each in fact - for sources unable to output over HDMI, such as the Xbox 360 (as odd as that is).

Additional features of the NR807 over the SR707 include internet-based firmware updates and DLNA 1.5 compatibility, giving access to internet radio services such as Last.fm or vRadio as well as files on a local network.

Available next month the TX-SR707 and TX-NR807 will cost £700 and £800 respectively, which isn't cheap but since when was price a good representation of value?
