Pioneer BDP-LX91 Launches

As highly as we rated the Pioneer BDP-LX71 Blu-ray player, it's impossible to deny it was missing a few features - most prominently BD Live support. Which is why Pioneer has introduced the BDP-LX91, which takes all that was great about the LX71 and brings it a little more up-to-date.

BD Live (or Profile 2.0 if you prefer) is now fully supported, with the LX91 sporting the requisite Ethernet port to use such content - as well as facilitating future firmware updates. For the unaware, this enables such amazing features as trailer downloads, online games and messaging services to be launched from within a Blu-ray disc's menu.
More importantly, content already stored on Blu-ray discs will be given the treatment it deserves with a newly-developed 16-bit video engine which should, if the LX71's performance is any indicator of the LX91's, offer great reproduction of not only high definition content, but also standard definition DVDs. 48-bit Deep Colour support is boasted, too(even if content is yet to be made available).
Audio reproduction is taken care of by eight dedicated Wolfson DACs, one for each of the output 7.1-channels, with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and bitstream output supported. Dual HDMI outputs mean audio and video signals can be transmitted to a TV or projector and dedicated audio receiver separately.
At £1,500-odd this is hardly a budget Blu-ray player. However, if the BDP-LX91's performance exceeds its predecessor enough, though, that could well be a tempting investment for the serious videophile.

Weeerl, it's not *that* much of an improvement over the LX71, so I'd hope it'll come down in price.

I'm with the smc, BD live is glorified dvd extras. Noone buys the disc for them and rarely bothers to take a look beyond deleted scenes. I just don't think they can jus... more
