Specs Leak On Sony's Ultra wide Netbook

It's always nice to kick off Boxing Day by hearing about the netbook you wish you were bought instead so here we go...

The specs from the impending Sony P Series netbook have arrived and as usual they illustrate that the King of Proprietary is determined to do things its way. Accidentally leaked onto the SonyStyle site and subsequently removed (but not before being snagged), they use a TT as a placeholder and leave blank a number of important stats but reveal easily the most interesting one...
An '8in LED backlit 1600 x 768 display' - surely that can't be right I hear you cry, but think about the the FCC filing and form factor snap (see below) which emerged at the start of the month (and confirmed Bluetooth and HSDPA options). Besides, such a native resolution would also be superb for multitasking and allow for a nice keyboard though you have to wonder about weight and how it would affect battery life - two of the notable specs left off the list.

Elsewhere the '1.33GHz Intel processor' seems likely to be an Atom but with Vista Home Premium and Basic listed as the OSses of choice (I wouldn't rule out an XP option yet) I'd hope it would be something with a bit more oomph. Meanwhile a 60GB HDD is pretty underwhelming and while the 128GB SSD option certainly isn't it doesn't really keep to the spirit of humble netbook pricing.
All in all then I'd suggest the Sony P Series will sport a price that excludes it from being called a netbook in the truest sense, but that certainly doesn't exclude it from being one of the more interesting laptop launches for 2009...

If it's anything like recent Sonys I look forward to the flexible creaking plastic, poor quality hinges and exploding batteries.
