What better way to celebrate the imminent dawn of a new year, if you're Onkyo, than by launching a 7.1-channel A/V receiver? Judging by the impressive performance of the TX-NR906 we should be able to expect good things.

Looking at the specs it certainly seems that way. THX Ultra2 Plus Certification and an ISF calibration mode get things off to a good start. Decoding of Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD continue that trend, with Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit DACS across all 7.1 channels taking care of audio reproduction.

On the video front 1080p up-scaling courtesy a HQV Reon-VX chip working on four HDMI inputs, enabling (in theory at least) great quality video to two HDMI outputs.

For sure the £1,500 MSRP is beyond the reach of all but the most dedicated audiophiles, or cash-flush oil magnates. But anyone having just splashed out over two grand on the excellent Kuro KRP-500A will doubtless want a decent A/V system to accompany it.

Is this the same as the Onkyo TX-SR876 except for the European market?
