Having looked at, and been impressed with Planar's line-up of DLP projectors, such as the PD8150, it will come as no surprise that we'd be interested to hear the company has a 3-chip offering in the pipeline. The Viper, as it is being called, may only be a 720p projector, but as anyone with a 720p Kuro will know, there's more to image quality than just pixels.

The full specs aren't available yet, but here's what we do know the Viper will pack:

• 1,280 x 720 resolution
• 10,000:1 contrast ratio
• 2,000 lumens brightness
• Supports 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p inputs
• 24fps playback
• Two HDMI 1.3 ports (other inputs not specified)
• 10-bit video processing

That video processing is likely to be similar to that which we found did an excellent job when we looked at the Planar PD370 37in LCD TV Screen. In theory, then, that should mean excellent standard and high-definition content handling.

The only downside, on paper anyway, the Viper suffers is that mere HD Ready resolution, rather than a Full HD one. Given that the 720p Viper carries a price tag of some $15,495 (~£8,330) it's perhaps understandable that a 1080p offering isn't available yet - the likely price doesn't bear thinking about!
