Pioneer may have scared us by ceasing its plasma panel production but all sins are now forgiven. As well as reaching a panel agreement with Panasonic, Pioneer has, according to German site Heise, officially announced its Kuro projector, the KRF-9000FD. Stand aside Kuro PDP-LX608D with your mere 60in plasma screen, Liquid Crystal on Silicon is here to rain on your parade.

So what does the Kuro projector offer then? To start with the KRF-9000FD boasts the expected 1,920 x 1,080, Full HD resolution, but that isn't anything special in today's market. What is noteworthy is the 30,000:1 native contrast ratio - courtesy of the LCoS chip.

Less stand-out features include twin HDMI 1.3 ports, component input and composite. Hopefully nobody buying such a projector would do it the disservice of using the latter input.

The LCoS chip itself is manufactured by JVC and, so far as we can tell, is the same one as used in JVC's DLA-HD100 D-ILA. Given that projector's Recommended Award-earning performance, we expect great things from Pioneer's rival unit - especially one carrying the Kuro brand!

Certainly if the €8,000 (£6,300) price tag is anything to go by only the AV enthusiast is going to be looking to purchase on of these projectors. But as the adage goes: you get what you pay for. You should be able to get your hands on one of these from the end of the month, just please don't tell me if you do - I couldn't handle the jealousy.
