TrustedReviews NewslettersConnected multimedia devices are becoming the latest must-have home cinema accessory. Whether it be AppleTV, Archos TV+ or perhaps the D-Link DSM-330, everyone's after a slice of the metaphorical media pie and soon Hauppauge will be looking for its share too.
Details are thin (read: near-inexistent) right now, but the information we do have tells us that the device will probably be very similar to the D-Link DSM-330, in that it will offer DivX streaming from network and online sources - including HD content. Given Hauppauge's background in TV tuners there is a faint implication that the device might also work as a digital PVR, which would give it a bit of an edge over rival products - that is pure speculation though.
You should probably have seen this coming: here's what Ken Plotkin, President of Hauppauge had to say regarding the announcement:
"Hauppauge, through our WinTV product line, is the leader in bringing high definition TV watching and recording to PCs. We are excited to offer our consumers a DivX Connected box which will play high definition recorded videos in the living room. DivX Connected offers our customers an open platform that can accept plug-ins, which will expand the types of media which can be played on a TV set."
Hauppauge says it is planning to launch come summer, which is a reasonably broad timeframe. We should expect to see more details emerge nearer to that period.
