We've heard rumours of Paramount's impending defection from the HD DVD camp in the past month or so, but to no avail. However, subsequent to Toshiba effectively sounding the formats death knell with its own abandonment, those rumours have come good. Paramount is now set to support Blu-ray, bringing Dreamworks with it.

The move makes the studio the last major one to make the switch to the now victorious Blu-ray format. A statement from Paramount, sent to The Hollywood Reporter, commented that:

"We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer, as we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly".

No other details were made available and there's no timeline on when Blu-ray releases should become available, but most estimates point to late spring or early summer.

Now that all six of the main studios have put their support behind Blu-ray we should be able to see a much greater focus placed on consumer awareness, rather than format rivalry. Fingers crossed for swift translations of the previously HD DVD exclusive Heroes, The Matrix Trilogy and Serenity.
