It’s long in the tooth and no longer sold by Apple, but you can still get the original iPad mini from third party vendors including Amazon and Argos. It’s a good option for those rarest of things – Apple fans without a lot of money to spend. The brushed metal rear is attractive and tough, and it’s easy to hold in one hand because it’s light and just 7.2mm thick.
The original’s screen is disappointing, however. It’s a 7.9-inch, 1,024 x 768 IPS offering that’s poor for reading on. Movies admittedly look okay, thanks to excellent contrast ratio and colour reproduction, but the mini 2’s Retina display is noticeably sharper.
You’ll have to take a slight performance hit too, but this will only affect you if you want to use heavy duty apps like 3D games and video/photo editing programs. Most apps run as smooth as you like. With mixed use, you’ll be able to squeeze around 10 hours from a single charge.
