Game Test 1 – Wings Of Fury

Game Test 1 utilises many elements of a real flight simulator but from an external viewpoint. It’s 1944 and fighter aircraft intercept a squadron of bombers as they close on their target. See the carnage as bullets rip through steel and aircraft fall from the sky leaving trails of smoke and flames.

This is a visually impressive test that makes use of particle effects for smoke and explosions. The sky is entirely single textured in nature and this test shouldn’t hinder graphics cards that are low on fill rate. This test is designed to run reasonably well on older DirectX 7 hardware and is perhaps the least demanding of the four tests in terms of the features it uses.

Primarily Tests For: DirectX 7 performance. vertex shader performance. Particle system performance. This test isn’t graphically intensive and fast graphics cards may become limited by general system efficiency

Game Test 2 – Battle Of Proxycon

Set in the depths of outer space, you’re called to defend your ship from attack as the enemy attempts to gain access. Dark and oppressive imagery adds to the atmosphere and claustrophobic feeling.

Written with the next generation of first person shooter such as Doom III very much in mind, Battle of Proxycon is a brutal test for even advanced hardware. Primarily based on the DirectX 8 feature set it draws heavily on a graphics card’s vertex shaders which are used to calculate shadows from multiple light sources and to skin the character models. The heavy reliance on shader performance means this test is unlikely to be heavily influenced by CPU performance. The Havok real-time physics engine is used throughout adding to the realism.

Primarily Tests For: DirectX 8 performance. vertex shader performance. Pixel shader performance. Stencil shadowing (and thus also fill rate).
