AMD Radeon HD 5850, 5870 Leak

With a new Windows operating system out soon, set to bring a new version of DirectX with, it's hardly surprising AMD is preparing a new range of graphics card. And, wouldn't you know, some details of the forthcoming Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5850 have leaked out a little early.

The two cards will launch in September and should appear in shops in October - conveniently coinciding with Windows 7's availability and fulfilling AMD's promise of DirectX 11 hardware before the end of the year. No performance-revealing details are available, alas, but at least we won't have to wait too long to get those.
With "AMD Stream technology" touted, we know that architecture is still in place, though with an unspecified number of stream processors and the possibility of some of changes to the architecture versus the 4800-series and older Stream-based cards. Programmers after non-Stream-based GPU-acceleration will be pleased to see DirectCompute 5.0 and OpenCL supported.
A tech called AMD Eyefinity enables three displays to be driven from a single graphics card, which is pretty nifty - albeit of niche appeal. Of more widespread appeal will be ATI Avivo HD video processing, made the more useful thanks to both cards' provision of HDMI outputs, in addition to one DisplayPort and dual DVI connectors.
Time to get saving?

I'm stopping myself from playing certain console games until I can afford the 'full' PC experience: Namely, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, etc.

I'm pretty sure that most people expected the next cards from ATI to be of the form 5800, at least to begin with. I guess this is just confirmation. I am still anticipating perform... more

ATi make great cards, but Game Developers hardly make any "decent" games for the PC now. They're either for Xbox or PS3. Shame that!
