nVidia hasn't been having a good time of things lately, financially speaking, and last quarter didn't do it many favours. While revenue grew 38 per cent to $664.2 million it was still down from $1.2 billion in the same quarter a year ago and, more worryingly, the company recorded a net loss of $201.3 million.

Nonetheless, nVidia is confident that its prospects aren't as bleak as could be considered. nVidia CEO and president Jen-Hsun Huang pointed out that: "We made good progress managing expenses and significantly reducing inventory, while continuing to invest in our growth strategies."

The launch of the Acer Aspire Revo, the first commercial ION-based nettop and the demonstration of a Tegra-based netbook are cited as successes of the quarter. Both platforms definitely have the potential to bring some much needed money nvidia's way, should buyers be tempted by the benefits, but some persuasion is going to be needed yet.

The forthcoming release of Windows 7 is expected to help raise GPU sales, adding GPU-accelerated functionality into the OS itself. We've some time to wait to see if that prediction holds true, though.

It's hardly surprising nVidia doesn't have the cash spare to be buying VIA shares...
