It's surprising, considering the amount of monitors now sporting DisplayPort connectors, how few graphics cards there still are which actually boast such an output. It's doubly surprising that the latest to join this select club comes from S3 and especially pleasing that it also sports HDMI and DVI.

As well as its breadth of digital connectivity Nvidia-eqsue naming the S3 Graphics chrome 540 GTX packs 256MB of DDR3 RAM in addition to support for DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.0. All but the most casual of gamers will probably find the performance likely offered by the S3 card underwhelming, though.
The 540 GTX also offers GPU-accelerated Blu-ray decoding; making those outputs that bit more useful. To make such functionality more worthwhile, the card comes bundled with WinDVD8, which supports the GPU-decoding of HD content.
The S3 Graphics 540 GTX is priced at $70 (~£50) in the states, with no UK pricing specified currently. If the card does hit the UK with low price it could prove a winner with HTPC builders given its video-decoding capabilities and single-slot form factor.

You know what they say: "The graphics card always looks more component-filled over the other side of the PCB."

Makes me sad when I see this... not making it passively cooled with a bigger heatsink is real penny-pinching, especially as this will only be bought by HTPC building types, who lik... more
