It's common knowledge that nVidia has been having a hard time lately, what with faulty GPUs, and lacklustre profits and GPU shipments. nVidia's board partner's seem to know it, too, as evidenced by the switch by XFX from an nVidia-exclusive brand to selling AMD graphics cards, too.

The collaboration will see XFX (and ATI of course) branded 4000-series graphics cards shipping in Q1 next year. Most likely products will be on show at CES, then, for us to gander at. Michael Chiu, Chairman and CEO of Pine Technology Holdings of which XFX is a subsidiary, commented: "we are delighted as this partnership allows us to incorporate the current and future AMD graphics technology into our future graphics card designs, and enables our R&D teams to develop an even wider range of graphics products for our worldwide customers."

Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD's Graphics Product Group added "[XFX's] decision to partner with AMD and launch AMD GPU-based XFX graphics cards speaks to the level of excellence achieved by the ATI Radeon™ HD 4000 series."

Uninteresting though many sticker board partner's can be, XFX has a reputation for offering some interesting options over and above being just another stock graphics card in a pretty box. We should be safe, then, in expecting good things.

The question now, of course, is: what will happen to the relationship between nVidia and XFX? And are any more partners planning to defect?
