All the information I've read points to the 4850 competing with the 9800 GTX, not the 8800s.

Humm...
ATI Radeon HD 3070
ATI Radeon HD 4850
Nvidia GeForce GTX 280
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX
Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra
It seems obvious to me that the STUPIDITY in nomenclature has undoubtedly lied in Nvidia's court for the past year or 2 or 3 or 4. Not to mention the naming of different cards/GPU's with the same numerical ID. What's up with that.
I agree that the comparison/competition was not intended for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 200 series. Although the performance charts indicate that they indeed do have and will likely(4870 & 4870X2) have similar performance to that series. The comparison was intended for cards at their respected price range whatever that may be.

The benchmarks I've seen tend to show the 4850 competing with the 8800GT & 8800GTS in most games - if anything slightly behind them. The GTX 260 should easily out perform the 4850. It will be interesting to see what difference GDDR5 makes to the performance of the 4870 though.
