nVidia isn't the first party to stump up details about it's forthcoming updates to its mobile graphics range, we have leaks at CES to thank for that, but some official details are never unwelcome. We had heard that nVidia was going to go official with its 8400M and 8600M replacements so for once the rumours are right on the money.

Starting with the 9300M, we see the same 16 stream processors as the 8400M as well as the same 400MHz core clock speed and up to a maximum 256MB of 600MHz memory on a 64-bit interface. Given the paltry graphics power the PureVideo engine is likely the most useful aspect of the card, offering as it does to offload H.264, VC-1 and MPEG2 decoding form the CPU.

Moving onto the 9500M we see 32 stream processors, a 475MHz core clock and 512MB of memory on a 128-bit interface running at 700MHz. As with the 9300, this chip does also appear to be just a change of name from its predecessor with the only noticeable difference being that there is a single option for each chip now - rather than the multiple versions on the 8-series mobile chips.

According to nVidia's site Asus is currently the only manufacturer with systems configured to use the new chips and has two systems forthcoming: the U3Sg packing a 9300M and M51Sn with a 9500M. Unfortunately those hoping for improved performance from the new parts will find themselves wanting, as the only purpose of this refresh seems to be bringing the nomenclature of nVidia's mobile parts in line with the desktop - unsurprising but disappointing nonetheless.
