I find it rather puzzling that AMD keeps on churning out new products without any real fanfare. Take, for example, the Mobility HD 2700, which appeared on AMD's site today, without any accompanying press release or, even stranger, any information leaked prior to the launch about the chips existence. Still, exist it does and although it isn't going to impress to the levels of nVidia's 8800M GTX, it still looks like a decent upgrade from the current best AMD can offer, the Mobility HD 2600.

As I mentioned, the Mobility HD 2700 is simply an upgraded version of its predecessor, so it still has the same 120 stream processors (just as seen on the desktop 2600-series), 128-bit memory bus and the same UVD features for offloading video processing from the CPU, but should also see a reasonable increase in clock speed.

This extra speed could mean the difference between playable frame rates and not, so on that basis we'd rather see the upgrade than not. Ultimately, though, I fear the Mobility HD 2700 is more likely to serve as an excuse for retailers and manufacturers to hike prices up a little further. Keep an eye out for systems sporting the new card come January.
