Sure, DiaplayPort equipped monitors may still be a little while away from being available to buy, but even if they where available today you couldn't actually use the connector, as no graphics cards on the market offer the required output. Somehow the folks at tech enthusiast site Hot Hardware have managed to get their hands on an early sample of AMD's RV635 graphics card which, as well as DisplayPort also offers both DVI and HDMI.

The RV635's codename implies it to be a descendant of the 2600 (RV630) series of cards rather than the newer 3800-series (RV670) so the latest UVD processing may be missing, although DisplayPort isn't designed to replace or replicate HDMI so a lack of video processing features isn't a deal breaker. More worrying, however, is the lack of grunt provided by the 2600 series; so far the only monitors we know of sporting the new input are the Dell W3008WFP and an unnamed Samsung 30in, both packing 2,560 x 1,600 pixel panels, not the 2600-series' preferred territory.

There is, of course, plenty of time for more graphically capable cards to be released before monitors capable of using DisplayPort are actually available, so it's probably unfair to be too harsh on AMD right now. Also, rumour has it nVidia is working on getting its DisplayPort-fitted product out early next year too, and we've yet to hear what manner of beast that will be. For now, though, AMD has the lead, a rare occurrence recently.
