So the 8800 GT has been released and tested getting a healthy 10/10 score, TrustedReviews Editor's Choice award and our general acclaim, but I am not interested in it whatsoever. Oh no, I need something bigger better and faster and nVidia is, as predicted, ready to oblige. The as yet unnamed chip will bring the already impressive G92 architecture up to 8800 GTX levels of performance.

The extra power comes from enabling a further 16 stream processors on the card, bringing the total to 128 (just like the GTX). These shader units would also likely be clocked faster than the GT and we wouldn't be surprised to see a dual-slot cooler to ensure maximum performance.

As G92 uses a 256-bit memory interface, the new part will come with either 512MB or 1024MB of GDDR3, which again will probably clock higher than the GT. Considering nVidia's top-end offerings haven't seen a redesign for a year now, the move is hardly surprising, notwithstanding the coincidence with AMD's forthcoming RV670 launch. Hopefully we'll be able to get our hands on a unit soon.
