Matrox Makes First Remote Graphics Unit

Taking a rather different approach to the current obsession with frame rates and clock speeds, Matrox has come up with the world’s first remote graphics unit.

In a completely fresh approach (that we know of), the Extio F1400 manages to separate user peripherals such as the keyboard, mouse, monitor(s), audio and graphics hardware from the rest of the PC.

Dubbed an RGU (Remote Graphics Unit), the F1400 consists of a graphics card with 128MB of memory, dual-LC connector for fibre optic cable, no less than four DVI-I monitor connectors, six USB2.0 ports (four front, two back), integrated audio hardware, optical digital audio output and analogue ports for line input, output and mic.

Each display can be handled at up to 1600 x 1200 resolution, while PCI and PCI Express versions of the F1400 are available thus suiting computers both old and new and it can be situated up to 250m away. Matrox sees key installation environments being audio and broadcast studios, dispatch centres, control rooms and public places using digital signage. The obvious benefit of the F1400 is that critical parts of the computer such as the disks, memory and processors can be kept in a separate and secure room.

Pricing has yet to be finalised, but the F1400 will be available from Q2. Queue endless jokes about forgetting our graphics card if it wasn’t screwed in…
