Matrox Makes Multi-Display Tech Pocket Sized

Like buying houses it seems your desktop is never set upon a big enough plot. Sure, you’ve got room for a nice two bed flat and your monitor can just about handle a couple of overlapping web browsers, but you’d be so much happier with a little more. Imagine then, if you could simply smash down the walls of your neighbours and expand into their space? Sadly, in this case, we live in a (more-or-less) democratic society so we can’t, but Matrox has created a virtual equivalent for your displays.

The DualHead2Go is a palm sized accessory which splits your system’s single VGA display output in two. Two monitors can then be attached to these enabling your desktop to expand across both screens at up to 2560 x 1024 resolution. In the case of a notebook, your third display also still works independently.

Suddenly the possibilities become much rosier. Just like if you had smashed into your neighbours bordering front rooms and made one area for watching movies, another for music and stuck a pool table in the third, now you can surf the net on one display, write email on the second and view photos on the third.

Obviously, the portability of this technology also means it has superb potential for presentations, eliminating the need to carry around a bulky projector while at the same time offering far more functionality. As for the nitty gritty, Window positioning and message pop ups are automatically managed by the company’s integrated PowerDesk software and though refresh rates are limited to 60Hz at 2560 x 1024 (2048 x 768 goes up to 85Hz), this won’t effect TFT owners – and who really wants to line up bulky two feet deep CRTs these days?

We’ll see the DualHead2Go on shelves and in Matrox’s online shop by mid-November with an RRP of £117.32 inc VAT. One is turning up in the labs soon too, so we’ll test it within an inch of its life. If only physical space was as easy to come by as virtual…
